Which resorts in Cancun still have a beach area after the Hurricaine?

I heard some resorts do not even have a proper beach with umbrellas and areas to tan and relax. Which ones still have a good-size beach? Thanks!

  1. Well, that's true and false. The beaches in Cancun definitely suffered a big hit from Hurricane Wilma back in fall of 2005. But beaches are natural things, and nature constantly regenerates its great beaches after storms, so the beaches in Cancun might have grown (or at least changed) since whoever you talked to was there. There are also regeneration projects going on, but whether those things keep happening in the face of a soured economy or not is anyone's guess (I've heard that there are proposals in the Mexican government to fund regeneration efforts for the next ten years, but at a cost of $100 million that needs to come from somewhere...considering the cash cow that Cancun tourism is, it's unlikely the government will not do whatever it takes to ensure beach quality in Cancun). Along the beach zone, many hotels have EXCELLENT beaches --- wide and powdery, just like they've always been. But your info is right --- some hotels don't. Their beaches are narrower than they once were and some have very little real estate for the tourists to fill with umbrellas and beach chairs. If you're worried about how the beach looks at a particular hotel, there is a web site that has dozens of recent beach photos from hotels all up and down the hotel strip. Take a look for yourself and you'll see which hotels have better beaches and which still have some work to do to get back their former glory. Have fun! Mark
  2. i know that this isnt exactly Cancun but I was in Cozumel in May 2008 and the beaches were WONDERFUL- everything had come back from the last 2005 bad hurricane- it was the best trip ever -
  3. Ya, there are somewhat two different answers to this question. Whomever told you the beaches are still messed up from Wilma are wrong. Yes, Wilma did destroy Cancún, but it's back to normal and more beautiful than ever. Billions of dollars have been spent to redo the beaches and they are amazing. Some sections are even bigger than before. I will provide a link of a video for you to watch to show you what I am talking about. Second part to the question though is that some hotels/resorts don't have a big section of beach or the umbrella cabanas that you see at most resorts. Riu Caribe has a huge beach at over 300yrds. with lots of cabanas and also Sun Palace has a big beach as well. Most of the better hotels that are on the Caribbean side of Cancún in the hotel zone have the bigger beaches. Cancún is shaped like the number 7 so the bigger beaches are from the bottom of the seven up to about 3/4 way up the seven. The waves are stronger/bigger on this side if that matters to you or not. Regardless though, the beaches are back and better than ever and most hotels/resorts have an adequate beach. Enjoy your time!!!
  4. My family and I went back in December 2006, and everything was ok the beaches were fabulos and beautiful. The beach at Gran Melia is so clear and beautiful. You can probably go to any hotel now and it willprobably be beautiful like nothing ever happened.
