How dependable is travel.state.gov? I know this site lists various travel alerts that Americans should pay attention to when considering traveling abroad but I have friends from a lot of the countries listed and they always say, "Oh it's not like that, we are very friendly to Americans" and they go on to list different cities that would be nice to visit. I know those warnings are there to protect us, but what do you think? Would ya still go? Just curious. I'm an adventurous person, but don't wanna make a mistake either.

Has anyone tried to use the state web-site and gotten a page to print out? Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but every time I try to do this, a page comes up saying "Your applicaton has not been found. It is possible it has not made it into our system yet." We applied 3 months ago!!! Any suggestions?

Why did Gov. Palin state that she only likes to travel to 'pro-America' parts of the country? What part of this country is not "pro America" and who is Gov. Palin to make that sort of assumption about any town, county, or state?
Is it safe for Americans to travel to Jordan now? I was wondering if it is safe to travel to Jordan now. The travel state gov website says terrorism is high but we were planning to visit family but are a little hesitant.

What is the "Department of State official proof of application for a passport."? what does the state department say about traveling to Ciudad Juarez? what does the state department say about traveling to Ciudad Juarez http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4755.html
Anyone else have the State Department lose their passport? I mailed my old passport in to the State Department's processing center last February to renew it, and I haven't gotten it back yet. After calling their 1-800 number ten times I gave up, since I got booted because 'no one was available to assist' me every time I called. Their website says my application could not be found, and I got a cryptic email back from them referring me to the worthless travel.state.gov website. Should I go to the nearest embassy to ask for a new passport? Since I live in DC, that would be the Kuwaiti embassy, but soon to be Chinese embassy once they are done with construction on Connecticut Avenue. Maybe I should go down to 18th street and see if Condy can help me out?;-) She'd probably just refer me to the website. No, seriously, anyone have this experience yet? Any suggestions on how to expedite the passport issue with the State Department since they lost my application, even after cashing my check?

Who are these White Nigerian Criminals in Lagos State? This is the first I heard of this. Thanks Deb for your answers. I have an interest in Nigeria and its life. Every answer that I get is appreciated. The State Department has a despicable travel warning on conditions in Nigeria about its lawlessness. It did not get their by accident. "The lack of law and order in Nigeria poses considerable risks to travelers. Violent crime committed by ordinary criminals, as well as by persons in police and military uniforms, can occur throughout the country." http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_928.html
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to event? ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business. The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel. In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.how is the right thing to do with tax payer money

Travel safety to El Salvador? I had originally told my sons father that he could take our son to El Salvador for the baptism of he and his wifes new baby. Now after reading on travel.state.gov. I'm having second thoughts due to the frightening statements regarding security. What I am looking for is someone who has traveled there or lived there and can give man a good opinion.
What are the passport requirements when traveling to the Philippines from the US? I was looking at http://www.travel.state.gov the other day on information on getting a passport for travel to the Philippines. I just 2 questions on the matter. When first-time applying for a passport and once I receive it, is it require to wait at least 6 months before traveling to the Philippines with the passport? I just read something about it, but maybe I am thinking of where I read it needs to be valid for at least six months beyond the intended period of stay. Question 2: I was looking at the DS-11 application for US passport and the very last part where it says Travel Plans, I was wondering, is this require to be filled out? I mean, given the exact date of the trip. I don't have any plan date yet and just looking for what is involve if I ever did decide to travel to the country. I figure I could get a passport in the near future so I will at least have that. Hope none of my questions are too stupid :P Thanks! Andy
How likely is it that my Korean fiance is to be denied entry into the states via the Visa Waiver Program? I'm bringing my Korean fiance to the states for one month to meet my family and come right back to Korea.. She has a passport, and applied for entry via the Visa Waiver Program(http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html). From what I read, even if they get an approved visa waiver they can be denied entry into the states without reason, and it cannot be debated. How likely is this to happen?
Crossing the border at Tijuana back into the US without a passport, just a green card? Is my green card realy enough to cross the border by foot or car back to the US? I am a Canadian citizen residing in the US with a green card. Unfortunately my Canadian passport has expired and it takes several months for them to renew it, just like in the US. I am planning a trip to Tijuana and I get conflicting information about the passport requirements. Will I run the risk of not being allowed back in the US if I have no passport, just the green card? I checked the travel.state.gov site but they give no specific information for green card holders in regards to this, just for US citizens. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

Can I use driver's license instead of copy of birth certificate for traveling to Canada? According to the information found on travel.state.gov, this is what I have found: Children 16 and under traveling alone should carry a copy of their birth certificate, baptismal record or a hospital record of birth in the United States as well as the proof of passport application status from the Department of State (DOS) for departure from the United States as well as re-entry to the United States. Acceptable confirmation of a passport application may be found at the Department of State’s website at http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html. Children older than 16 and traveling alone are required to have a government-issued photo ID in addition to the proof of passport application status. I am 16, and will be traveling to Canada with the proof of passport by air, can I use a drivers licence instead of copy of birth certificate, even if I am in the 16 or under? Do they just mean a photocopy of the birth certifcate? Thanks! Thanks for any advice
What is a noncitizen national of the USA? A person born in certain offshore territories is a national but not a citizen of the USA. The State Dept says that at http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_781.html but it doesn't say what greater or lesser rights he or she has. Does anybody know?
Help! Traveling internationally (with layover) in a country that has a U.N. travel warning? I'm traveling to Uganda (Africa) from Boston, MA to volunteer on a medical mission for two weeks. 1.) I am not religious or crazy. I am also a Caucasian American (no offense to any of this), this is just something I need to do as a person. 2.) Kenya (Africa) has a travel warning: My flight plan goes from Boston, MA ---> Amsterdam, Netherlands ---> Niarobi, Kenya ---> Entebbe, Uganda. Question is: Will it be safe to have a layover in Kenya? It's only for two hours and I'm not the type to look for trouble. I know that a single traveler can get mugged anywhere but is this something I need to be concerned about? Is there militia going to see me and want to kill me right off the bat. I am lost on this. Or will I just be safe in the airport? heres the travel warning: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_923.html Thank you Charlie!
Do I need a passport card or book to travel to Mexico by sea in October 2008? Has anyone traveled on a cruise to the Western Caribbean with just a birth certificate and driver's license lately? I think people can still do this until June 2009. Is this true? From http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html LAND AND SEA TRAVEL The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website. CURRENTLY: U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. LATER: On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document. Thanks!
What do you think of the U.S. travel "alert" re: traveling to Toronto later this month? The media is calling it an "advisory" and the U.S. government has an "alert" on their website for Americans to avoid travel to Toronto later this month during the leaders summit. What do you think? Is this anti-Canadian or it it the U.S. government doing its job to inform its citizens of possible danger in the world? Your comments are appreciated. Read up on the issue if you like: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_5070.html http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/06/17/con-toronto-travel-advisory.html Thanks.
How Dangarous Is It For Americans To Travel In Algeria? I'm planning on going some time, and I've read some information and am aware of the dangers, but how much of it is true? Is it really dangarous to travel overland? And I knew about the kidnappings, but I thought they were rare incidents. I thought only kidnappings by terrorist groups happend every once in a while. Is it really as common as they say. And I didn't even know about bombings and fake roadblocks. Is it really that dangarous and that bad? I wanted to drive around the country, but after I read that, I might just drive that stretch of coastline east of Algiers to Constantine, and then I might use soem other transportation. I will probably have a group of people with me, so I wouldn't be alone, but I still don't wanna risk the dangers. So what would be the best way to get around besides driving yourself. Okay, which areas are the most dangarous, and which areas should be avoided? Also, I was just wondering out of curiosity, what if you went with a television film crew? Would that increase or descrease your risks of getting kidnapped or ambushed? Here's where I got the information, but how much of it is actualy true? http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1087.html Also any other information about the country such as food, customs, languages, festivals, prices, places to stay, or anything else important would be appreciated. Merci/Shukran

State ID and Birth Certificate not enough for US passport???? I applied for my US Passport on October the sixth. I went to a passport acceptance agency (US Post Office) and had the photos taken there, and also paid the fee to have it expedited. I was told It was door to door three weeks maximum. I paid two way overnight delivery as well. The total came to 195$. Three weeks passed, and I received a letter a few days before I was to receive my passport. It stated that I had not provided sufficient information to prove my identity, and that they required at least five documents with my photo and signature dated to prove who I am. It could be nothing recent. I provided my original Birth Certificate in good condition as well as my current Maryland State ID, just as it states on the site and they requested at the post office. Why was this not enough??? I of course do not have any of these documents and they all take weeks to get. I missed my trip. ANd they will not give me a refund, not even for having it expedited, because they said it was because they needed those other documents... I think this is complete crap. They told me "The state ID was not enough because it is a 'non-driving' ID." It says right on their site (travel.state.gov) all you need is those two documents. SO I spoke to a supervisor... He said the best thing he could tell me to do is go to DC to the agency with my mother, and my sibling who has a passport, and to bring my ID and social Secutiry card and try to work something out, but he could 'not assure me of anything.' I plan to go on Wednesday.... but I am worried I still won't get it. They seem to really not want to give me this thing that Ip aid for, for no good reason. They are also now saying that the passport photos taken by the post office were the wrong size, so now I have to go get those retaken. This is absurd! Honestly, what should I do?? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this??? Are they giving me the run around and if so why? ... before anyone asks, yes, it is legitimate, like I said I applied at a US post office. Any idea what is going on, anyone??? What should I do? The date of my next day of travel is approaching and they are still giving me a hard time. WTH?!?
Do you need a passport to travel from Los Angeles to mexico? This what I found: CRUISE TRAVEL The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) Passport Requirements became effective June 1, 2009, for land and sea borders. While the WHTI requires a valid passport for land and sea travel, a final ruling was issued allowing leniency for “closed-loop” cruises, i.e., sailings that both originate and terminate in the same U.S. port. Recent guidance received from the Department of Homeland Security indicates the documentary requirements under WHTI for “closed loop” cruises are not limited to cruises that travel only to contiguous territories or adjacent islands. This means U.S. citizens calling on ports in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Belize will also be exempt from the passport requirement. U.S. citizens taking “closed-loop” cruises are not required to have a passport, but will need proof of citizenship such as an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, a passport card, an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) as well as a government-issued photo ID. Children are also required to bring proof of citizenship, and if 16 and over, a photo ID is also required. Canadian and Bermudian citizens are required to have a passport for air, land and sea travel, including all Carnival cruises. Although a passport is not required for U.S. citizens taking “closed loop” cruises, we strongly recommend all guests travel with a passport (valid for at least six months beyond completion of travel). Having a passport will enable guests to fly from the U.S. to a foreign port in the event they miss their scheduled embarkation or to fly back to the U.S. if they need to disembark the ship mid-cruise due to an emergency. If a cruise begins and ends in different U.S. ports or begins and ends in a foreign port (such as our Alaska cruises and Hawaii cruises) a valid passport or other recognized WHTI-compliant document is required. A valid passport is required if you are traveling on any of our Europe cruises. For more information, a complete list of WHTI-compliant documents or to obtain a passport application, visit www.travel.state.gov U.S. Alien Residents need a valid Alien Resident Card, Non-U.S. citizens need a valid passport and a valid, unexpired U.S. Multiple Re-entry Visa, if applicable.
Passport required for all air travel? This is a revision from the previously announced date of January 8, 2007. Here are the current rules regarding the need to have a Passport for travel within the Western Hemisphere: AIR January 23, 2007 – Passport required for all air travel within the Western Hemisphere and abroad. U.S. Citizens departing and returning to the United States by air after January 23, 2007, will be required to have a valid U.S. Passport. The Passport office is already busy and this will likely contribute to a backlog that could result in lengthy issuance delays as these rules take effect. obtaining or renewing a U.S. Passport can be found on the State Department's Web site at http://www.travel.state.gov/passport
How long for a passport renewal? I applied at my post office on February 12, but I still haven't received my passport (it's been 30 days). I'm leaving in 2 weeks, and I'm really afraid I won't get it in time. I even checked travel.state.gov to see my application status, but after I put in my information, they said they have no records of my renewal. What should I do?
Is it better to marry in her country and bring her to the US or should I apply for fiance visa? I want to do the right way, bringing her here legally and as quick as possible. Is it safe for a female (me) from the US to travel alone to Bangalore India for work? I have read on http://travel.state.gov that there are Travel Alerts for India. Along with the 30 bombs that detonated in Bangalore in July 2008, I am most worried about this comment from the website: “U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India. Western women continue to report incidents of physical harassment by groups of men. Known as “Eve-teasing,” these incidents can be quite frightening. While India is generally safe for foreign visitors, according to the latest figures by Indian authorities, rape is the fastest growing crime in India. Among large cities, Delhi experienced the highest number of crimes against women. Although most victims have been local residents, recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas underline the fact that foreign women are also at risk and should exercise vigilance.” I am really worried and thinking it isn't the risk to go (especially when it is for work!!)

Answers for would be immigrants to the USA? I have read many questions on this topic over and over. First spend some time on the US govt immigration site at www.uscis.gov, then learn more on www.travel.state.gov to learn more about passports visa etc. www.ed.gov for foreign students, teachers, study abroad. etc. So, next time you see a question on yahoo you can pass around the website i have posted above. Be kind as someone has gave you helpful info, help someone else as well. The US hates illegal immigrants but we welcome those who have gone through the trouble our ancestors did and do the paperwork the legal way. www.altavista.com has an online translator called babelfish in many langauges. you can cut and paste text onto the site. ed.gov also tells how to get your foriegn educational training credential for example. teachers, doctors, lawyers and you can learn that some jobs are easier to get into the us than others.
I leave in a week but have not received my passport...what options do I have? I applied for my passport about 5 weeks ago, expedited the process and have yet to receive my passport. I leave April 4. Can we print the passport application on regular white printer paper? I will be traveling out of the US in a month and a half or so and need to get my passport. I went to www.travel.state.gov to find out how to go about it, since this is my first time. I read that I can print out the application and then bring it in with me. My question is: "Can we just print the application on regular white printer paper?" According to the webpage it says that the application has to be printed on matte surface paper. Here's the page that states exactly that: http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/forms_847.html So is it okay on regular white printer paper?
How do I/can I renew a U.S. passport if I was under 16-years-old when my passport was issued? I would like to renew my U.S. passport, which was issued to me when I was under 16-years-old. The passport will not expire for a few more weeks. I would just renew it via snail mail, however a requirement (according to travel.state.gov) states that you can only renew a passport by mail if you were over 16-years-old when it was issued. How then can I go about renewing my passport? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
Is it illegal to make a photocopy of my U.S. passport for my personal use? I want to travel and make sure I have a backup in case I lose my passport and need to prove my citizenship while overseas. The State Dept. website states the following "If you can provide the U.S. embassy or consulate with a photocopy of your passport identification page, that will make getting a new passport easier since your citizenship and identity information would be more readily available." - http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/emergencies/emergencies_1197.html Yes, the State Dept. suggests it, but does that mean it is legal or illegal? Many photocopy places (i.e. Kinkos) state that you can not use their machines to make copies of IDs. Again, this does not clarify the legality issue. Any help would be great.
Affidavit of Support: How can I re-establishing domicile? I'm a US citizen but I moved to Thailand for 20 years. Now I want to take my Thai wife to live with me in USA. According to http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3183.html I have to re-establish domicile. I have several things that might convince the NVC, but I don't know how to make them concrete evidence. 1) I've been accepted to a Master's degree program in USA. This means I will definitely stay in USA for at least 2 years. (I plan to work after that) 2) My cousin lives in USA and she is willing to let me and my wife live in her house. 3) I can go to the district office in Thailand and tell them that I intend to "move out" from my house in Thailand. What kind of documents can I get from the above? Do you have additional suggestions for me to do? (I won't find a job in USA because I will be studying my master's.) If the NVC is not happy with my documents, will they reject my wife or will they ask for more documents?
Can a learners permit be used for a passport or must It be drivers license? I currently asked a question about passports but I want to ask this as well because I am looking at the form to recieve one for the first time. I am reading that I have to show proof of identity and it says driver's license. I do not have a drivers license but a learner's permit which I figured would be ok since it shows my signature and picture but this form says no. When I checked on the site (www.travel.state.gov) it said driver's license but then also said state, federal id, which should include a learners permit because that is state. Can anyone help me figure this out? Is a learners permit just as good as a driver's license in this case?
Is my delayed certificate of birth enough proof of U.S citizenship to get a passport? According to the travel.state.gov webpage, a delayed certificate of birth (one where the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office is not within 1 year of your birth) MAY be acceptable if it: - Listed the documentation used to create it and -Signed by the attending physician or midwife, or, lists an affidavit signed by the parents, or shows early public records. My delayed birht certificate lists the following supporting document 1: Certificate of baptismal record supporting document 2: Afft. of Sophia Valdez these two include who issued it and signed it, and they also have my father's and mother's name, DOB and place of birth. Will this be enough? I hope so. Please help.

Do you know about the Visa Waiver Program? Do you know that the United States has a visa Waiver Program for 27 countries (including the United Kingdom)? Citizens of these countries may visit the U.S for 90 days or less without a visa. I have seen incorrect information on this subject given several times and just want to share the correct info. See travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html#countries This has nothing to do with illegal aliens. the web site is valid and does work. It is travel.state.gov, then look for visas, then the visa waiver program. It is a valid program .
Can state gov's reimburse LESS than the Fed guidelines for mileage reimbursement as they wish? I do some work for a school system and had to travel recently. They reimbursed me for mileage, but at the old 2006 rate, not the new 50.5 cents rate that the Fed Gov posted as of 1/1/2008. When I complained they said the state can do whatever it wants, it isn't bound by federal guidelines, and when they decide to up their rate, they'll let me know. I thought that IRS thing was the official TAX RULE on reimbursing for mileage. Are state gov's and their employees truly exempt from that rule? (I know church organizations can do this, but I didn't think state schools qualified as churches.) I'm losing $15! I mean, I'll LIVE, but it's the principle of the matter! After a lot of $15's, the state ends up ripping off employees of potential reimbursements!!! So is it legit, or are they FOS? Interesting responses so far. Too bad the rest of the IRS code doesn't follow the same rules! It would be nice if I had the option of reimbursing the government for its expenses at whatever rate I thought I wanted to do! LOL.
